Restaurants
Well spring break is over and now I'm back at school. What did I do most of spring break? I worked at TGIF. Although when I called to work I thought I would be a busser, but due to changes made by our general manager there are no bussers during the weekday.
So since I worked from Tuesday to Saturday, I was a host Tuesday through Friday. I did not really enjoy being a host that much, for many reasons. One reason is that you have to deal with many people who are jerks about everything. Some people are picky about where they sit they say, "Can we get a booth?" when I take them to a table and I'm thinking whats wrong with this table. So since the servers are all assigned different tables I have to go back and check where I can seat these people so they get a booth. Most of the time the only booths available are in the section of a server where I just sat so I would be double seating them (seating two tables at once). Then there are some people who are really impatient and ask me "What about these tables?" as they point to empty tables. So I'm thinking to myself its because no one is serving those tables and theres a reason why they're empty, but no I calmly explain that is not covered by a server. Then you get some people who just outright complain in front of you about how slow it is for them to get a table, to this I would like to say, then don't come during dinner time when you know about everyone is gonna eat dinner so its your fault for coming later and not early. People who eat really early for dinner are smart because they avoid the huge crowds of people who are also planning on eating dinner. So if your waiting a long time to be seated don't blame the restaurant blame yourself for going when there is an influx of people. Every worker in the restaurant is doing their best to get tables bussed and people served, but we do not have any control over how long people will sit and talk.
This sort goes back to my psych class I took last quarter since we went over the fundamental atribution error, which is you place too much blame on personality factors and not enough on situational factors. This basically means that you only think how wrong the other person is and don't think about how or what the other person is going through. So when you're at a restaurant and complain that the service is slow then you're guilty of the fundamental atribution error because you fail to think about how busy the restaurant is and how the servers, bussers, or hosts/hostesses are all trying to accomodate everyone. Instead of complaining try to think about what is going on to cause the slow service.
One last thing, you don't really want to piss off anyone who works at a restaurant because they can do just about anything to your food and you wouldn't know about it. Since I'm working at a restaurant, TGIF, I know that we're not supposed to do that but you actually never know what other restaurants might do that. Take the restaurant in Waiting for example the lady in it was really mean and so they did all this nasty stuff to her food and she ate it. I'm just saying don't be mean to the servers, hosts/hostesses, or the bussers because you never know what they could do to your food and you wouldn't even know about it. So be nice to strangers because you wouldn't want strangers to be mean to you now would you?
